The YMCA in Africa is structured in two layers – the Programme Innovation and Management role played by the Africa Alliance of YMCAs (AAYMCA) and the grassroots implementation role played by the Country chapters (or National Movements) in 23 different sub-Saharan countries. AAYMCA builds the internal capacity of the National Movements to deliver sustainable, innovative services to young people in the grassroots, captures learning from the initiatives and provides initiative for scale.

Our Theory of Change: SUBJECT 2 CITIZEN

Programme interventions are guided by a Theory of Change which we refer to as the From Subject to Citizen (S2C) Philosophy. S2C is a Rights-based approach whose main objective is to empower youth to become active and engaged Citizens who have the skills, capacity and motivation to participate in and/or take active lead in bringing about sustainable solutions within their communities. S2C is actualised through a simple yet powerful and innovative model of youth empowerment christened
“PowerSpace”.

The Powerspace is a 4 step human-centred, iterative youth empowerment methodology that provides a structure for activity planning, delivery and impact measurement. The Powerspace consists of the following steps:

  1. Engaging youth through appealing activities
  2. Building self-awareness in youth
  3. Building skills
  4. Linking with opportunities
