Our Health Matters: Creating Space for Women in Media to Pause, Reflect and Connect

Strengthening the Movement in South Sudan: Assessment, Partnership and Celebrating Women’s Leadership
31/03/2026

In media and communications, the pace is relentless, expectations are high, and the need to always be “on” is constant. Yet, moments to pause and reflect are rare.
On 11 April 2026, the Africa Alliance of YMCAs (AAYMCA), in partnership with the Network for Media and PR Women and Pamoja Mental Health & Safeguarding Network, hosted Our Health Matters at the Africa YMCA in Nairobi.
The event brought together women professionals from across the media and communications landscape for a dedicated space to explore mental health, wellbeing, and the realities of working in high pressure environments.

A Space to Pause and Reflect

The day began with a vibrant aerobics session, setting an energizing tone and reinforcing the importance of physical wellbeing as part of overall health. This was followed by interactive sessions led by Pamoja Mental Health & Safeguarding Network, creating a safe and supportive environment for participants to engage in open conversations.

Through guided discussions and shared experiences, participants explored:
I.   The impact of high pressure work environments
II.  The importance of mental wellbeing in sustaining performance and creativity
III. Practical ways to manage stress and build healthier work practices

The sessions emphasized that mental wellbeing is not separate from professional success, it is central to it.

Building Community Through Shared Experiences

At the heart of the event was connection. Participants shared stories, reflected on their experiences, and engaged in meaningful dialogue with peers who understand the demands of the industry.
The event created a safe and inclusive space where women could be open, supported, and heard, reinforcing the value of community in addressing mental health challenges.

A Holistic Approach to Wellbeing

In addition to the discussions, the event incorporated wellness activities and experiences that supported both mental and physical health. This holistic approach highlighted the importance of caring for the whole person, not just the professional role.

Moving the Conversation Forward

Our Health Matters was a reminder that wellbeing must be part of the conversation in media and communications spaces.
By creating intentional spaces for dialogue, reflection, and connection, the event contributed to a growing movement that recognizes mental health as essential, not optional.
The Africa Alliance of YMCAs remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote wellbeing, strengthen communities, and create spaces where people can thrive.
