As part of one of the Key Deliverables As an S2C Ambassador which is to design and implement an activity at the end of each Cohort. One of Liberia's S2C ambassadors implemented an activity within the west Point Community Title; “SAFE ENVIRONMENT A HEALTHY PLACE TO LIVE." This activity was designed to have a stakeholders engagement meeting and a joint Clean up campaign exercise as a way of raising awareness on issues surrounding Improper waste disposal.
On the 3rd of March the S2C Ambassador in collaboration with Monrovia City Cooperation conducted a Stakeholder Engagement meeting bringing together 15 Participants from CBEs, Community Leadership on Waste Management,(Beach and Waterway), and Disadvantage Youths who are allegedly found in the habits of disposing waste anywhere in the community.
The the objective of the Meeting was to clearly understand the current pattern of waste Disposal practices, to give out awareness messages on Proper waste disposal and Benefits, to share information on the existence of CBEs within the community, understand community willingness to subscribe to paying fees for waste and to understand Government regulations surrounding Proper waste disposal. The engagement meeting was also intended to allow the government Authority to provide formation and clarity on Proper waste disposal sites and to emphasize the mandate and penalties for illegal waste collectors. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that a joint cleaning-up exercise be connected as a way of showcasing what is expected of community members who generate waste.
The joint cleaning-up exercise was also conducted to create awareness on the importance of Proper waste management inorder to have a Clean and Healthy Environment. It was also done to improve the existing waste disposal practices at the Community level and increase community dwellers' willingness to subscribe to Community Based enterprises and participate in the Community in regular clean-up activities, to Cultivate behavior change, and approaches as it relates to improper waste disposal and Management.
At the end of the Activity, one of the Newest CBE called (Success Venture )which was allowed allowed to market his business as a young entrepreneur in Waste Collection informed the YMCA S2C Ambassador about the impact the activity had on his Business. As a result, he and two of his staff promised to come and take up membership with the YMCA through the National Youth Council, which I believe contributes to the aspect of membership and Resources.
