Ghana YMCA’s filmmaking program is more than just a series of workshops—it's a visionary project aimed at unlocking potential and providing real opportunities. Participants are immersed in the entire filmmaking process, from scriptwriting and directing to editing and production. This holistic approach ensures that they are well-rounded and prepared for various roles within the industry.
One of the many success stories from the program is that of Fransisca
"My expectations were exceeded. I have met new friends. The facilitators had time for us and were down to earth. They taught us everything to our understanding. It has been a very nice experience."
Francisca has been passionate about making documentary films for a while but had not received any training that enabled her to do so.
Since participating in the Accra film training workshop she has learnt about writing documentary films and how to direct them. She hopes to use this new-found knowledge to kick-start all the projects she had been developing.
In addition to technical training, Ghana YMCA places a strong emphasis on networking and career development. The organization connects participants with industry professionals and potential employers, bridging the gap between education and employment. This comprehensive support system is designed to ensure that young filmmakers have the resources and connections they need to succeed in a competitive field.
The program also fosters a sense of community among its participants. Many alumni continue to collaborate on projects, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the training period. This camaraderie not only enhances their professional growth but also contributes to a vibrant and dynamic film industry in Ghana.
The impact of Ghana YMCA’s filmmaking initiative is already evident, with many graduates securing internships, jobs, and even starting their own production companies. The organization’s commitment to youth empowerment and skill development is setting a precedent for other regions, highlighting the importance of creative education in fostering economic and social development.
Taking this new part into sound recording and sound in film was something Amuzu had wanted to do for a long time. He realised he could do a lot in sound after he attended broadcasting engineering training at Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
Amuzu is skilled in Photography, Camera and sound. He has attended several film workshops by the Ghana YMCA and its film partners and is now a second-generation trainer in sound.
David Nii Okai is a PR practitioner who's hoping to improve his professional capacity through documentary film writing at our Writers Room III Workshop.
David discovered the workshop through a friend and saw an opportunity to refine his writing skills with the hope of producing high-quality documentaries for the organization he serves. With an academic background in Journalism, he hopes to make award-winning documentaries that inspire conversations about development and important social issues.
David says, "I recommend this workshop to all communications professionals and screenwriters because it's a game-changer for you as a person and as a professional. The lessons have broadened my knowledge in Communications in general, but specifically, given me the additional skill of writing films for my employer and clients.”
