Ghana YMCA holds film workshop for females

The Ghana Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) onWednesday held a workshop on film making to inspire young women within the filmindustry to feature in all fields of film making.

The two-day training was a continuation of YMCA’s initiative, which commenced last year dubbed “All on Board Film Project”.

The objective for the training was to equip interested and talented young film makers in visual media and audio-visual production within the West African Sub-Region with focus on Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The training is a joint initiative of YMCA and Weltfilme.Org and had trained over 80 young people in various fields of film making with a production of six short films since its inception in March 2018.

Mr Samuel Asamoah, the Director of Programmes, YMCA said, the first day’s training was strategically reserved for young females who are interested in various fields of filmmaking to capacitate them to excel in their fields. 

He said, the move was as a result of the gap in the film industry which YMCA intended to close by inspiring young females.

The entire project which is expected to take three years and beyond was sponsored by Bread for the World and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Mr Asamoah said, this year YMCA and its partners would initiate a multi stakeholders’ discussion to explore the prospect of establishing a media education hub and training centre in Accra to serve the rest of the West African sub region.

“We are looking for an economically sustainable media hub and training centre”.

He explained that the hub would serve as an incubator to train talented young film makers and the industry players connecting the business aspect of film making.

Mr Asamoah urged young people in the film making industry to be part of the training to enable them develop their skills in the field.

Mr Kwabena Eddie Mankata, a trainer at the event said he was happy to share his knowledge of film making with the young females.

He noted that the workshop was interactive, thereby making the participants eager to learn, which he said was a good sign.

He said the future holds good things for the young people in the film industry, adding that, “If more training of such nature is organised, I believe young people can explore and do greater things.”

YMCA is a nongovernmental organisation with an aim of empowering youth people in Ghana and the entire African renaissance.
