From May 1st to 3rd, 2025, YMCA leaders from across Africa gathered in Nairobi, Kenya for the Africa Alliance of YMCAs Executive Committee meeting. Over three days, the convening radiated purpose-driven energy and collaboration. Participants shared a clear vision and strong commitment throughout, making the event a resounding success in strengthening the African YMCA movement.

Strategic Focus on YMCA Vision 2030

A guiding theme of the meeting was the strategic alignment with YMCA Vision 2030 – the global shared strategy for the YMCA movement. Every discussion and planning session was anchored in this long-term vision. Delegates examined programs and initiatives through the Vision 2030 lens, ensuring that outcomes remained focused on empowering young people and fostering sustainable community impact across the continent. This emphasis on a unified strategic direction kept conversations forward-looking and inspired a collective determination to achieve the 2030 goals.

Leadership Dialogue and Collaboration

The agenda featured leadership reports from various national YMCA movements and vibrant group dialogues. Executive Committee members presented updates on progress and challenges, which sparked insightful discussions in small groups. These dialogues allowed leaders to exchange ideas, celebrate successes, and brainstorm solutions together. The interactive format proved invaluable – strengthening leadership capacity and reinforcing the sense of regional unity. By sharing experiences and best practices, the committee members demonstrated the power of collaboration in driving the Africa YMCA mission forward.

Guest Insights and Celebratory Conclusion

One major highlight was the participation of special guests Prof. William Otiende Ogara an Executive Coach, Serah Joy Malaba of Tiko and Dr. Romeo Effs, CEO of Lumorus. Their external perspectives on social impact and leadership enriched the conversations and encouraged innovative thinking. Their presence underscored the importance of partnerships beyond the YMCA family and reinforced the movement’s focus on leadership development.
Executive Committee members finally celebrated unity with a final group photo. The meeting concluded in a celebratory and united spirit. The final group photo captured the diverse leadership team standing together, symbolizing the solidarity and enthusiasm that defined the gathering. As the event wrapped up, attendees left Nairobi inspired and aligned – ready to carry the momentum back to their communities and collectively advance YMCA Vision 2030 across Africa.
