Education is a powerful tool for transforming lives and strengthening societies. Yet, access to higher education remains out of reach for many young people in regions facing economic and post‑crisis challenges. Recognising these barriers, YMCA Sierra Leone has partnered with Bread for the World to implement the Mano River Union Scholarship for Change Programme. The initiative offers a holistic scholarship scheme that is already supporting 30 scholars from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

A comprehensive scholarship package

The programme provides opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in disciplines that contribute to national and regional development. Each beneficiary receives support that goes far beyond tuition assistance: the scholarship covers academic fees and provides essential learning resources such as laptop computers. Financial assistance also helps cover basic study‑related costs, reducing the pressure that often disrupts academic progress for students from vulnerable backgrounds. This integrated approach allows recipients to concentrate on their studies while building the skills required for long‑term professional growth.

Strengthening regional leadership and cooperation

By including students from three neighbouring countries, the programme is deliberately structured as a regional initiative. Scholars participate in a shared learning experience that promotes cross‑border understanding, cooperation and a strong sense of regional identity. Beyond academic success, recipients are expected to demonstrate leadership, ethical conduct and community engagement. These values reflect YMCA’s long‑standing commitment to youth empowerment and leadership development, placing young people at the centre of change processes.

Looking ahead

For many beneficiaries, the Mano River Union Scholarship for Change represents a decisive turning point in their educational journey. It not only removes financial barriers but also sends a strong message of trust in young people’s potential to shape their communities. YMCA Sierra Leone and its partners remain committed to accountability, transparency and meaningful impact throughout implementation, with ongoing monitoring, mentorship and regional collaboration supporting scholars during and beyond their studies.

This initiative demonstrates how strategic investment in education and youth leadership can foster an inclusive, resilient and hopeful future for the Mano River Union region.
