After completing senior high school in 2017 with no hope of furthering my education at the time, the YMCA became my refuge and has helped shape me into the person I am today. Joining the YMCA in April 2017 ignited my passion for service. The vibrant community I encountered and the dedication to youth development resonated with me, and I knew the YMCA was where I needed to be—a place where I could grow, learn, and make a ditterence.

One of the most impactful aspects of my YMCA journey has been the mentorship | received, both directly and indirectly. Learning from senior volunteers who offered guidance and support as l advanced in my YMCA journey has been invaluable. Observing these senior volunteers, their passion for service, wisdom, and encouragement, has significantly contributed to my development within the YMCA. I have learned, and continue to learn, the importance of association, leadership, and the efforts needed to become a better version of oneself. Volunteering with the YMCA, my happy place, has also broadened my horizons, allowing me to form friendships within and outside the country. These connections have made me more open-minded and helped me understand different cultures while experiencing various YMCA governance structures. The friendships and shared experiences with fellow YMCA members have created for me a global family I cherish deeply. The YMCA has been more than just an organisation for me; it is truly my home now. Being a member of the YMCA has contributed immensely to my personal growth. I encourage anyone looking to make a difference and be part of a service-oriented community to join the YMCA. My name is Desmond Adjei-Sarpong and the YMCA is my happy place!
