YMCA-Togo fights the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic

To slow the spread of Covid-19, many countries have introduced unprecedented measures, with significant social and economic costs: closing schools and businesses, canceling sporting events, confinement; and limitation see travel ban.

The YMCA-Togo to fight against this growing pandemic made a donation on Friday March 27, 2020 to the detainees of the civil prison of Lomé. The handover ceremony took place in the presence of the first officials of the UCJG / YMCA-Togo, the civil prison of Lomé and those of the Legal Club. The lot consists in particular of 55 kits which will be used to make 825 liters of liquid soap, 15 kits of bleach for 375 liters and 13 empty 5-liter cans to condition the products to be produced. The use of these products will therefore allow beneficiaries to observe the recommended preventive measures to prevent the spread of viruses.

“This morning, we came to the Lomé civil prison to show our solidarity with the detainees; We are in the context of the fight against the prevention of Coronavirus disease and knowing the situation of hygiene and sanitation needs in the prison, we deemed it necessary to make our contribution ” , specified Franck GAFAN , Director of Programs at YMCA-Togo.

The beneficiaries recognize the value of this donation and also express their gratitude to the donors for this gesture in this period of global health crisis. They promise to make good use of it. These believe they do everything to ensure that other prisons in the interior of the country also benefit.

”  We are all aware of the news regarding Coronavirus which is ravaging and which is becoming a crisis … This donation is timely to support us because as I said there is no budget planned for that. So UCJG assisted us with these important kits, being that we have a staff here to prepare it, to make it useful to us; we are more than happy with this gift. I assure you that it will not be for the use of the civil prison of Lomé only “admitted Gmakani Nikabou , Director of the civil prison of Lomé.

It should also be noted that the first officials of the UCJG / YMCA-Togo also gave the prison warden posters to raise awareness of the Coronavirus pandemic. Remember that this donation was possible thanks to the partnership with YMCA of Sweden.

In addition to this donation to the Lomé civil prison, the UCJG / YMCA-Togo has ordered 1000 barrier masks which will be used for the distribution of YMCA members in Local Unions and to beneficiaries. Other actions in particular the installation of Tippy Tap  in several communities coupled with awareness-raising are done by the members at the base.
