ORIGIN OF FATHER’S DAY? AND WHY WAS IT INSTITUTED?
Father’s day is celebrated every year in most countries on the third Sunday of June.
Father’s day originated in the United States, where it was instituted by President Calvin Coolidge in 1910.
The idea of establishing a day for father’s feast comes from Sonora Louise smart Dodd. Since Sonora’s mother died, it was father William smart who raised only his 6 children on their farm.
Dad’s day is celebrated around the world. One of the first feasts of non-religious fathers was created in 1912 in the United States. It was a young woman who had the idea in 1909 following the mother’s day sermon. Sonora smart Dodd then proposed that the family fathers also have their parties. This young girl raised by her father after the death of her mother wanted to testify to her gratitude. Sonora’s father was born on June 19 and the first feast of the fathers was celebrated on June 19, 1912. Also in the United States, President Lyndon Johnson officially proclaimed “father’s day” in 1966 for the third Sunday in June.
Sonora smart Dodd decided to work for a day of homage for all fathers in the United States. She filed her first application in 1909. The first celebration of father’s day took place on June 19, 1910 in Washington State and in what other States.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge proposed that this party should become national, but it would have to wait 1966 for President Lyndon Johnson to sign a presidential statement that instituted the third Sunday of June father’s day at the national level.
The child draws benefits from the presence and action of his father at his side. The father’s day therefore corresponds to a legitimate and opportune desire of the parents.
The father holds an important role in the development of the child, as well as the mother. Coparentality, respect for the rights of the child, respect for gender equality between the father and mother and the recognition of so-called “atypical” family configurations are essential to help the child grow well.
WHY SHOULD THIS TRADITION BE MAINTAINED AND WHAT IS THE FATHER’S IMAGE TO CELEBRATE?
Father’s day is an opportunity to take ownership and disseminate a positive vision of fatherhood. I think it is necessary to desacralize the image of the father, who must go from the status of “father of the family” to that of “father of the child”.
There is no question of opposing the figure of the stern father, embodying the law, with that of the Papa hen. Of course, the father, aided by the mother, must show the limits to the child, in order to help him internalize the forbidden. Of course, the father, the first “other”, has an essential role to play in socializing and sexual identification of the toddler.
But it also contributes to the construction of the child’s language and intelligence, as well as to his emotional anchorage. It is therefore a question of promoting paternity in a concrete function of awakening and dynamization of the child, in order to help him to grow, to realize and to empower himself.
