Africa YMCA Celebrates International Youth Day 2018

12th August, 2018

Dear  Africa YMCA friends,

We would like to share with you the statement for the celebration of the international youth day.  The theme for the UN International Youth Day 2018 is Safe Spaces for Youth.

At Africa YMCA, we developed the concept of Power space to mobilise youth both inside and outside the YMCA for the Africa we want. The Power Space is the vehicle that is giving birth to young confident, empowered, articulate and energised change-makers in their communities. The power space concept has four distinct areas:

  • Engaging youth through appealing activities

Activities which will engage the target youth to become aware of the YMCA and creating a space where youth want to attend. For example, art, public speaking, sports or music activities.

  • Linking youth with opportunities

To fully realize this transformation, the Power Space will link youth with exciting and promising opportunities to fully realize their potential.

  • Building self-awareness in youth

Building self-awareness of youth’s dreams, aspirations and goals in life. Helping youth to gain critical life and personal development skills.

  • Building skills for youth

Once the youth has a clear picture of where they want to go in life and what they want to achieve, the Power Space builds the required skills to help them achieve this.

We are committed to Agenda 2063 vision, ideals and aspirations of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.

We fully support International Youth Day and the creation of Power Spaces for Youth. We welcome all to continue supporting our efforts in creating, holding safe and nurturing spaces to empower the youth.

Kind regards,

Carlos Sanvee

General Secretary
